Dartmoor
Dartmoor National Park wilderness is just half an hour away from Ashcombe Country Cottages . The protected landscape is great fun to explore and is a popular day trip for our guests. Haytor Rocks are the twin granite tors are visible from Ashcombe.
There’s so much to explore on the moor and even most locals have only discovered a small part of it.
Amazing landscape, rivers and tourist attractions are there to be found!
Moor Walks
Our favourite place to visit is Bonehill Rocks, just the right amount of walking up hills to see the incredible view.
Or try the short hike to the top of Haytor Rocks and then eat at the nearby Rock Inn. Travel a little further to reach Widecombe-in-the-Moor where the famous Widecombe Fair has been held on the second Tuesday in September since 1850.
River Picnics
The Rivers Dart and Teign both rise on the moor, follow them over the traditional stone bridges and along river-side paths. You’ll probably meet the indigenous ponies on your travels.
Take a picnic with you and sit by the river for a while. Try a swim in the River Dart!
If you are brave and very fit you can apply to ride in the Dartmoor Classic bicycle sportive event, but be warned that they contain several steep hills which feature in the list of top 10 hill-climbs in Britain!
You can choose from 45, 66 or (the frankly bonkers) 107 mile course.
Proper Planning
The winters can be harsh on the moor, there is often snow on the tops of the moor in winter. Generally the milder Devon climate does mean that heavy snowfalls are rare.
Please always be prepared with suitable clothing, footwear and provisions. Adventure sports and activities do require proper planning.
